Large Oval Lightship Basket Attributed Andrew Sandsbury
12" Oval Nantucket lightship basket with oak staves, handle, rim, cherry base and brass ears, attributed to Captain Andrew Sandsbury (1830-1902). At the time this was made there were only a couple weavers making oval forms. Davis Hall was credited with making the first oval, Hall and Sandsbury both worked together on the South Shoal Lightship, there baskets are very similar and its presumed they shared a lot of the same molds.
